How to Stop Your Hearing Aid from Whistling

During these appointments, we often get reports from patients who have noticed an unusual whistling sound from their devices. So, if you’ve suddenly noticed a change in your hearing aid’s performance, you’re not alone.

In fact, an unwanted screeching or chirping is one of the most common issues reported to us at Aim Hearing and Audiology Services. The good news is that there are plenty of things you can do to completely remove it and get your hearing aid back to brand new.

What Causes Feedback?

The first thing you should check is how well your hearing aid is fitted inside of your ear. If you find that you are having to readjust your hearing aid regularly and shift it into place, then it might be time that you have a conversation with your audiologist.

Sometimes the earpiece inside of your hearing aid can shrink over time and cause the sound to escape, which feeds into the microphone. This can cause your device to produce a whistling or screeching sound.

If you are a new user of hearing aids and you’re noticing some whistling or chirping, it may be worth taking a look into your device to see if it is right for you. It may be that we need to recalibrate your hearing aid, which allows us to adjust it to your ear properly.

The most important thing is that your hearing aid fits perfectly to your ear and performs just how you want it to. That way, you can prolong its longevity and maintain it for as long as possible.

Another important thing we look out for is earwax. This is particularly important, as a large buildup of earwax can cause a blockage to the ear canal, which impacts the amplification provided by the hearing aids.

She received her Bachelor of Science in Communication Disorders and Master of Arts degree in Audiology from the University of North Carolina Greensboro. She was awarded her doctorate in Audiology from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry: School of Audiology. While in undergraduate and graduate school, she worked at the Central School for the Deaf as a residential counselor. Dr. Frymark spent the first five years of her audiology career with Florida Hospital in central Florida.
