Recently, we hosted an educational event to help our community learn about cochlear implants and other implantable solutions. There is a lot of misconception about who could be considered a candidate and the process, so we were excited to host an in-person learning session.
On July 19, we gathered at Guilford College with community members to discuss these unique hearing care options. We answered many questions and were happy to see our patients learn about options beyond their hearing aids.
What was This Event About?
We always face questions about the validity of today’s technology. While most of it is centered around hearing aids, we wanted an event that was strictly devoted to cochlear and other implantable solutions.
Many patients are surprised to hear that this technology exists. When they do find out, often it the same day as an audiologist is recommending it to them. Educating yourself and your loved ones is the best way to ensure you are on the right path to maximizing your hearing potential.
With dedicated time spent on teaching our community about cochlear implants, we can help them make better decisions about their hearing future.
Why is Hosting This Kind of Event Important?
We know there’s lots of information on the internet, but when it comes to your health, it’s better to speak directly to a professional. This type of event lets people ask the questions they want and get a personalized answer in return.
It also helps to know that you’re not going through this alone. There are others nearby with the same concerns as you. We all want to hear our best and be knowledgeable regarding our hearing health, so being able to discuss this face-to-face with friends and families is a way for us to show that we’re here to help.
What We Talked About
- We wanted to lay a solid foundation of knowledge for those who are just learning about cochlear implants. Many people there had never heard of this solution before, so we made sure to start from the beginning.
- Next, we took a closer look at the features and benefits associated with cochlear implants. Many questions arose about the differences between this and hearing aids. We were happy to answer all of them.
- We also discussed the procedure. While this is a surgical procedure, it’s quick and does not require an overnight stay.
- Lastly, we spoke with a volunteer recipient who was happy to share their success story with the group. This opened a lot of eyes and it helped to hear a personal story from someone who has been on the cochlear implant journey themselves.
Why do We do This?
Despite how far technology has come and how much research and education we have on the subject, there is still no cure for profound hearing loss.
However, there are many solutions that could be successful for our patients.
Therefore, our best course of action is to educate our patients and provide them with the tools and knowledge to succeed.
We do this every day at our office and through various online platforms, but the most effective way is word-of-mouth.
Hosting free educational events encourages people to talk about it and learn how to treat and manage hearing loss.
We love to work with families, helping them learn together and encourage their loved one with hearing loss.
The more we can band together, the better our chance of living with healthy hearing.
