What Stops Most People from Addressing Their Hearing Challenges

What Stops Most People from Addressing Their Hearing Challenges? | Patients of Aim Hearing Answer

When it comes to addressing hearing challenges, many people put off seeking help for years. In fact, it’s common for individuals to wait seven to 10 years before taking action to treat their hearing loss.

But what is it that holds people back? We’ve asked some of our patients to share their stories and explain what finally made them take that first step.

Their answers reveal the most common reasons for hesitation and how they overcame these barriers to enjoy better hearing and a fuller life.

1. Denial: “It’s Not That Bad”

Many of our patients admit that denial played a huge role in delaying their decision to seek help. Hearing loss often develops gradually, so it’s easy to convince yourself that things aren’t really that bad. You may think you’re just missing a word here or there, or that people around you are mumbling.

For Kathy, the first sign of hearing loss was needing the television volume higher than the rest of her family. She also found herself relying more on lip-reading to follow conversations. Despite these signs, she delayed seeking help for a while. Kathy initially visited a national hearing aid franchise, but had a negative experience. It wasn’t until she came to Aim Hearing that her perspective changed.

“I had a totally different experience here. I appreciated the time they took to care for me, and there was no pressure,” Kathy shares. Hearing aids have improved her life significantly, and she has since recommended Aim Hearing to friends.

2. Stigma: “I Don’t Want to Be Seen Wearing Hearing Aids”

The stigma associated with hearing aids is another big reason people delay treatment. Hearing aids have long been linked with aging, and many people worry about how they will be perceived if they start using them.

Fran had a similar fear, especially as her hearing loss was related to her breast cancer treatment. She recalls how asking her husband to repeat himself became more frequent, and she began to fear what people would think of her wearing hearing aids. However, her first experience at Aim Hearing was warm and welcoming.

“I was blown away after meeting Dr. Shannon. We just clicked,” says Fran. Her hearing aids have made a world of difference in her life, especially since music is a big part of her world. “Dr. Shannon changed my life,” Fran adds, with tears of joy when she reflects on how her life has improved.

3. Fear of the Process: “I Don’t Know Where to Start”

For some people, fear of the unknown holds them back from addressing their hearing challenges. The idea of getting a hearing test or starting a hearing treatment plan can be intimidating, especially if they’re unsure about what to expect.

Zack, who was diagnosed with central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) at just 25 years old, initially hesitated. It wasn’t until he visited Aim Hearing that he felt confident enough to move forward with hearing aids, which have since changed his life.

“If you’re considering visiting Aim Hearing, you have nothing to lose,” Zack says. “They’re a great resource for helping you with unusual situations.”

4. Underestimating the Impact: “It Doesn’t Affect My Life That Much”

Many people underestimate how much their hearing loss affects their daily lives and relationships. They may not realize how often they miss out on conversations or how much energy they spend just trying to follow along in social settings.

For Fran, it took a direct question from one of her students to make her realize she had a problem. “A student asked me, ‘Do you have something wrong with your hearing?’ That’s when it clicked,” Fran explains. Since getting her hearing aids, she no longer shies away from social situations. She feels like she’s “part of life again.”
