What’s the Difference Between Apple AirPods and Prescription Hearing Aids?

by | May 7, 2025 | Hearing Aids, Patient Resources

With burgeoning advancements in auditory technology, the tools designed to enrich our auditory experience are more sophisticated than ever.

Among these new and improved innovations are Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 and prescriptive hearing aids: two very different devices, yet both deeply rooted in enhancing how we engage with the world around us.

With both now boasting hearing aid capabilities, you may find yourself wondering, “Which option is best for me?”

You can make an informed decision that suits your lifestyle and hearing needs by fully understanding your available options and seeing which is best for you.

Apple AirPods Pro 2: More Than Just Music

Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 are renowned not just for their crystal-clear audio and fashionable design, but also for their groundbreaking hearing aid features. Apple’s first forays into hearing care were Live Listen and Conversation Boost, but this time they’ve dug a little deeper.

Thanks to their 2024 iOS 18 update, these earbuds now come equipped with an in-app hearing test and basic amplification abilities, and they have received FDA approval for hearing care, making them a good beginner’s choice for those looking for hearing care with a lighter touch.

The beauty of AirPods Pro 2 lies in their versatility; they seamlessly transition you from listening to music to taking calls, all while offering hearing aid functionalities.

Pros:

Multifunctionality

Serve as both high-end earbuds and over-the-counter hearing aids.

Portability and Aesthetic Appeal

Compact, lightweight, and stylish, seamlessly blending in with modern tech accessories.

Seamless Integration

Their design ensures seamless connectivity with Apple devices, offering a user-friendly interface.

Cons:

Limited Range and Amplification

They primarily benefit those with mild to moderate hearing loss and do not provide tailored hearing solutions, like tinnitus management or auditory processing disorder assistance.

User-Led Care

Apple AirPods are fitted, programmed, and adjusted by you, without the assistance of a professional audiologist.

Limited Battery Life

Due to their multifunctional use, they require frequent recharging and can only last a few hours outside of their charging case.

Basic Hearing Test

The in-app hearing test is a pure-tone audiometry test, which assesses whether you have hearing loss or not—a basic test compared to an audiologist’s comprehensive hearing assessment.

Prescription Hearing Aids: Customization Meets Cutting-Edge Technology

Prescription hearing aids specialize in catering to individual hearing loss needs; custom fitted by an audiologist based on a thorough audiological evaluation, your hearing aids are programmed with you at front of mind.

Thanks to advanced technology, prescription hearing aids can be finely tuned and adjusted to fit the complex listening spaces you frequent, from the gym to the café to your very own home.

By partnering with a team of passionate professionals, you can rest assured that your devices come with the expertise of an audiologist to help you make adjustments as needed, so you won’t miss a beat!

Pros:

Tailored Solutions

Each device is bespoke, perfectly adjusted to match your specific hearing profile and personal requirements.

Advanced Features

These may include noise cancellation, multiple listening modes, directional microphones, and wireless streaming capabilities.

Professional Support and Adjustments

Regular consultations with audiologists ensure ongoing optimal functionality and customization to your evolving hearing needs.

Cons:

Expense

Upfront costs can be significant due to the personalized service and sophisticated technology.

Time-Intensive Process

Initial fitting and subsequent adjustments require time and multiple appointments.

Choosing the Right Device for You

Deciding between Apple AirPods Pro 2 and prescription hearing aids boils down to your specific needs.

The AirPods Pro 2 may be ideal for you if you experience mild hearing difficulties and are looking for a device that integrates hearing aid capabilities with other tech functionalities. Their convenient form factor, paired with modern-day tech versatility, makes them a good fit for tech-savvy individuals seeking basic enhancement.

However, if you’re dealing with significant hearing impairment, particularly across varied environments, prescription hearing aids emerge as the unrivaled choice. Their bespoke design ensures comprehensive support, delivering superior sound quality tailored specifically to your hearing requirements. The dedicated support from audiologists further enhances their value.
